With the addition of Device Plug and Play (PnP) capabilities to the operating system it became a great deal easier to setup, configure, and add peripherals to a PC. Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) extends this simplicity to include the entire network, enabling discovery and control of devices, including networked devices and services, such as network-attached printers, internet gateways, and consumer electronics equipment. UPnP technology is all about making home networking simple and affordable for users so the connected home experience becomes a mainstream experience for users experience and great opportunity for the industry. In other words, an UPnP-enabled device can communicate with other UPnP-enabled device regardless of the manufacturers and compatibilities. This is crucial for home networking where most users are not familiar with technology.
icube is committed to support UPnP in Play@TV from 3Q, 2003. Play@TV is aimed at home entertainment market, and it is important to provide easy installation and setup with the product. Our UPnP implementation is going to be based on Intel's UPnP tools which are adopted by many third party vendors. Thanks to UPnP technology, we expect users will enjoy not only better out-of-box experience but also more compatibility with other products.
The first release will include UPnP AV 1.0 and the support for UPnP Remote IO and UPnP AV 2.0 will follow. It is our goal to help customers have better and broader experience in digital home entertainment and we believe making our products compliant with international and/or industrial standards is another step forward.
